While the temperature is the limit for HPS lights, this is not usually the limiting factor when growing with LED lights. Nowadays LED Grow Lights are available in any quality, size, and form. The differences in quality, output and reliability are most times hidden in technological details, which are hard to identify. In addition, some manufacturers or resellers sell products that may be dangerous for the user because they do not comply with general safety standards. The following rules should help to find your perfect LED Grow Light.
The 5 Essential Rules for Growing with LED:
Choosing the right distance
Always follow the manufacturer’s recommended hanging distance to ensure even light distribution and the right intensity. Brands like SANlight even offer custom simulations.
LEDs cannot cool room
LEDs are efficient but won’t lower room temperatures. While they emit less heat than HPS, they still require proper ventilation or AC system in hot environments.
Handle your temperature
LEDs emit less radiant heat, which can lead to cooler plants. In cold rooms, use a small fan above the fixture to push warm air downward and maintain healthy temperatures.
Do not overpower!
Start with low light intensity and increase gradually. Flowering phase requires 30% more intensity due to shorter light cycles.
Clean Your Grow Light Regularly
Dirt buildup reduces light output over time. Just like reflectors in HPS setups, LED lights must be kept clean for optimal performance.
Additional grow room tips:
A larger grow room improves air buffering and workability.
Stable room temps (20–22°C) are ideal.
Use exhaust fans or windows for proper airflow.
Heaters are recommended for temps below 19°C.
