Calculating your efficiency

For years, growers measured efficiency in grams per watt, like 600 g from a 600 W HPS. But this method leaves out one key factor: time. It doesn’t reflect real energy usage, which is what truly impacts both costs and sustainability.

A better way is to look at grams per kilowatt-hour (g/kWh). This takes actual power consumption over the full grow cycle into account.

In real-world tests with different lighting strategies, SANlight found that adjusting light intensity across the grow can lower energy use while maintaining high yields. In one example, a setup using less total power actually delivered better efficiency in g/kWh, even if the grams per watt looked slightly lower.
